A Hair-raising World Cup

A week into arguably the biggest sporting event on the globe, and there’s been no shortage of talking points.

From dodgy officiating in the first few days, to unlikely upsets that have cost this writer and probably a few of you, bit of money already.

But what has stuck out, have been some of the hairdos worn at the 2014 tournament in Brazil.

I don’t, mean the hideous peroxided heads of Neymar and Dani Alves against Mexico on Tuesday.

I am talking about the players who are not only fortunate to grow an impressive mop of hair, but proud to comb it out and parade it in all its glory.

I will admit that I am biased towards the afro as I have a messy one of my own, but it’s seems players making the headlines from the competition have been the ‘big-headed’ types.

So to pay homage to these afro ambassadors, I have compiled a top four list of those making the greatest impact at the tournament so far.

4. Marcelo – The Brazilian left back scored the first goal of the 2014 Fifa World, although it was into his own net.

Despite the bad start, the Uefa Champions League winner rose like a freshly combed mane to impress for the rest of the game and tournament so far.

3. David Luiz – also a Brazilian defender, Luiz like his hair is not a player of half-measures.

He is either fantastic or shocking with nothing in-between.

So far he’s been solid and high on confidence.

Being the most expensive defender in the world could be to blame.

2. Pepe - Like with everything in life, there is the good, the bad and the ugly.

Unfortunately this recent afro convert falls into the latter.

His top may resemble a cushy helmet, but as he found out against Germany, using it on an opponent still warrants a red card.

1. The TOP position goes to the king of Afros, Marouane Fellaini - having had a debut season to forget at Manchester United, many had written him off.

Even I was starting to think that maybe this Belgian’s game would never be as big as his ‘fro.

But after coming off the bench to head home the much needed equaliser against Algeria, there could be more magic to come from his woolly crown.
